Although
substantial amounts of money are raised by the Tree of
Light, it is run primarily as a service to the public.
It has proved to be very popular in Telford and members of
the committee are frequently asked "Will there be a Tree
of Light again this year?" and "When does it start?” Service
to others is at the heart of Rotary's ideals and the Tree of
Light is a good example of what Rotary is about - as embodied
in its motto 'Service Above Self'.
In 2007 the Appeal was supported by thousands of individual
sponsors, and raised over £33,000. Every penny of the
total sum contributed by members of the public was shared between
five charities; The Telford Day Hospice, part of the Severn
Hospice received half of the money raised with the other half
being shared equally between Telford and District Young Carers; Wellington & District Cottage Care Centre Trust; Wrekin and Telford Stroke Club and The Salvation Army KIP Information Project.
Again, our thanks to everyone who continues to support the
Telford Rotary Tree of Light.
